NEW DELHI: Lucknow-bound Shatabdi Express from New Delhi was checked again at Kanpur station on Sunday afternoon, hours after it was evacuated and subsequently cleared of any bomb threat at Ghaziabad.
There is no detail yet of any kind of explosive found on the premier train yet. The alert was triggered following a letter received in Mumbai threatening of attacks on all Kanpur-bound trains from the national capital.
On Sunday morning, the Lucknow Shatabdi train was stopped at Ghaziabad for an hour – shortly after it left New Delhi at 6.10am – during which it was evacuated and all its coaches searched. It left Ghaziabad at around 8am.
Meanwhile, Government Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force with dog and bomb disposal squads also checked many trains in Varanasi, which is also Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
DCP (Railways) Dumbere Milind Mahadeo said, “We received a call from the railway control room in the morning in which they said that they have information about a potential bomb threat on a train plying between Delhi and Kanpur.”
The security at various stations has affected the movement of many Northern Railway trains, already running late on a foggy Sunday.
Security has also been beefed up at Nizamuddin, New Delhi, Old Delhi and Anand Vihar railway stations in the national capital in view of the alert sounded following the terror attack at the Indian Air Force base in Punjab’s Pathankot.
The encounter at Pathankot restarted on Sunday afternoon after two more terrorists were spotted inside the air base. Seven security personnel and five suspected Pakistani terrorists have already been killed in the attack.
