Reports say that images from about 6,000 security cameras across Japan can be viewed on an overseas-based website.
Security cameras are usually set to be monitored remotely by their owners via the web. Experts say other people cannot see the footage if passwords are set properly.
But according to Japan’s Information-technology Promotion Agency, currently an overseas-based website displays footage from cameras at about 28,000 locations around the world, including about 6,000 in Japan.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that security cameras are very useful to prevent crime.
He said the password settings for the security cameras in question may have been insufficient.
Suga said he will call on people to exercise care to ensure public security.
