Mie Prefecture in central Japan has banned the flight of drones around the venues of the upcoming Group of Seven summit.
An ordinance adopted by the prefectural assembly took effect on Monday.
It bans the flying of unmanned aerial vehicles over Kashiko Island in Shima City, where the summit will take place, as well as a 1.5-kilometer radius of the island.
The ordinance also covers locations where the world leaders will visit, and anywhere within 300 meters of such places.
Those who operate unmanned aerial vehicles in these areas without the governor’s permission can be sentenced to up to one year in prison or slapped with a maximum fine of about 4,400 dollars.
The ban will remain effective until May 28th, one day after the end of the summit.
A local police official says security measures at the summit need to take drones and other threats from the air into account.
