Tokyo police have sent about 200 officers to Mie Prefecture to help out with security ahead of the Group of Seven Summit that begins on May 26th.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department held a send-off ceremony on Sunday for the first group of reinforcements to the site of the Ise-Shima G7 summit.
The mobile unit’s leader, Kenji Yamada, said there should be no failure in providing security, particularly after the terrorist attacks in France and Belgium. He told the team not to overlook any signs of possible terrorism or illegal actions.
The officers headed for Mie in a convoy of about 40 vehicles.
Police say that from Monday the team will begin guarding areas around Kashikojima Island in the city of Shima, where G7 leaders will meet.
Tokyo police are planning to continue sending units alternately in response to a request from their prefectural counterparts.
