A South Korean man being held in connection with an explosion at Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine was served a second arrest warrant on Thursday.
Jeon Chang-han is now suspected of bringing metal pipes stuffed with gunpowder into a restroom at the shrine and detonating them, in violation of the explosives control law.
The 27-year-old was previously indicted for entering the premises for unlawful purposes.
Witnesses heard a blast and saw smoke and a small fire at the restroom on November 23rd last year.
Police quoted the suspect as saying he understands why he’s under arrest but that he doesn’t want to talk.
Jeon reportedly made remarks to the effect that he felt offended by the shrine, in part because those convicted of war crimes after World War Two are enshrined there.
