A bomb blast has killed at least six people and wounded 13 in a suburb of Cairo, Egypt. The bomb exploded when police officers raided an apartment.
The Interior Ministry says police officers were raiding the building where a suspected hideout of the Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, was located. The ministry says the blast occurred as officers tried to defuse the device.
The six people who were killed include police officers and civilians near the building.
The government under military-backed President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has cracked down on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups since former President Mohamed Morsi was ousted after a de facto military coup three years ago. Morsi, who belonged to a now-defunct party representing the Muslim Brotherhood, was the first democratically-elected president following the Arab Spring movement that began in 2010 in Tunisia.
Terror attacks have been repeated in the country as some Islamists became extremists. The Islamic State militant group has also spread its influence in the country.
Authorities are tightening security as Monday marks the 5th anniversary of the start of the Egyptian uprising that led to the collapse of the government under former President Hosni Mubarak, Morsi’s predecessor.
