The website of Japan’s health ministry has been disrupted since Monday night.
Ministry officials say the website became inaccessible at around 9:30 PM.
They say they were also prevented from sending or receiving e-mails through their system for about 4 hours through early Tuesday morning.
About 30 minutes after the website went down, someone claiming to be a member of Anonymous, the international group of hackers, posted a message on Twitter. It said that the group had carried out the attack.
Anonymous is suspected of attacking a number of Japanese websites since last September. The targets include the websites for aquariums, groups related to dolphin and whale hunting, airports, news organizations and government offices.
The Financial Services Agency and Narita International Airport faced similar problems with their websites earlier this month.
Health ministry officials say they took preventative measures after experiencing a cyber-attack in November.
They say they are trying to identify the cause of the ongoing problem and restore the website as soon as possible.
